WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I HAVE TO MEET?
To begin, you need to think through carefully why you want to take courses abroad. What do you hope to gain? Do you want to learn about another culture? Get "on the ground" experience with another language? See how another educational system works? Regardless of the program, you first need to know yourself and what you want to accomplish by this experience.
In order to receive credit for courses taken abroad you should apply to the Study Abroad (SA) Office at the beginning of the semester prior to your proposed SA program nd fill out a Course Request form.. This will allow time for you to work with the SA office to select an appropriate program, and for a review of your record by the Faculty SA committee. General qualifications to participate in a SA program are:
- The student must plan on participating in the SA program during their Junior or Senior year in Dowling College if the student is an undergraduate;
- Have an overall GPA of at least 2.7;
- Must have been a student at Dowling College for at least two semesters before beginning the SA program; and
- Receive written approval from the Faculty Study Abroad Review Committee, Dowling College Study Abroad office and from Student Services.
These qualifications are subject to waiver by the SA Office on advice and recommendation of the Faculty SA committee or the Vice President of Student Services.
In order to be considered for credit -- and if appropriate, award of the student's financial aid package -- a course must be offered by either an exchange University (a university with whom Dowling College has an exchange agreement) or a university recommended by a provider with whom Dowling College has a relationship.
Courses offered by exchange universities may be approved as appropriate for Dowling College credit by a Dowling professor who has specific familiarity with the University and its courses, or by prior approval of the abroad University by World Education Services (WES). Courses offered by study abroad providers must be taken at universities which are certified in advance by WES as being accredited by the appropriate government or agency for that country. Notation of this prior approval will be made on a form signed by the study abroad office and by student services, and made available to the registrar.
Credit will be awarded only if Dowling College receives notification that you are registered or enrolled in the courses specified directly from the cooperating university or other official source. Generally this notification must be received by the Registrar of Dowling College before you leave the U. S.
At the conclusion of the student's SA program, grades and credit must be certified by application to WES along with a sealed official transcript from the SA University. Grades and credit recommendations offered by WES will be accepted and noted as Transfer Credit on the student's transcript. Grades will not be indicated, rather acceptance of courses for credit will be indicated by the notation "Y" on the transcript.
