Undergraduate Programs

The teacher education program at Dowling College offers a course of study leading to New York State initial certification. Dowling's education students are equipped to integrate traditional learning with emerging knowledge, skills, and technologies. Our close partnerships with multiple school districts ensure our curriculum is relevant and adaptable to change.

"I like the warm feeling you get at Dowling. Faculty and staff are willing and determined to give students the best educational, personal, and professional services possible."

Secondary Teacher Certification Program

The emphasis of the Secondary Teacher Certification program is on the subject the student plans to teach, on a series of sequential education courses that prepare the teacher candidate to successfully confront the challenges of teaching, and on two practical supervised student teaching experiences at both the Middle School and High School levels.

Students, in conjunction with Education and Content Area advisors, design a program that will provide them with necessary instructional and classroom management skills, as well as content area courses required for the Dowling College degree and for New York State Teacher Certification.
Certification areas are:
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Earth Science
  • English
  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Physics
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish
  • Theater
  • Visual Arts

In addition to meeting the academic area requirements for certification in their respective departments, students must demonstrate competency in a language other than English and have taken a broad background of coursework in Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, and Social Studies. Student Teaching

The cornerstone of our Education program is the student teaching experience. Our student teachers spend more time in classrooms observing and learning than those in other education programs, earning a well-deserved reputation as being best prepared for their first professional elementary, secondary, or special education positions. Dowling maintains one of the highest percentages of student teacher placements among Long Island colleges.
