Honors Program
Course Requirements and Academic Pursuits
Honors Program students are expected to engage in original thinking about, independent inquiry into, and articulate commentary on topics that have been determined appropriate for each aspect of the core requirements.
- The Honors Program Forum: The main objective of the Forum is to allow students to share with their peers the outstanding fruits of their research in an annual colloquium. In this colloquium, those students who have been nominated by their faculty read a condensed version of their paper and are awarded a prestigious certificate of recognition signed by Honors Program Director Dr. Stephen Lamia and College President Dr. Jeremy D. Brown.
- The Freshmen Seminar: During the first semester, all freshmen meet together weekly with Dr. Lamia in their unique course of study, The Freshmen Seminar. The curriculum around which this seminar is designed is interdisciplinary in nature and is augmented with field trips and extracurricular experiences meant to enhance traditional classroom learning.
- The Senior Seminar: This seminar is an enhanced version of the college-wide required senior seminar and also involves both fieldwork and extracurricular experiences. A scholarly research paper is the culminating experience of this course of study. The offerings in the Senior Seminar have included such topics as Ancient Egypt, Rich in America, and The Culture of Madness, among others.
All four-year students who wish to graduate in the Honors Program must enroll in and complete 36 credits of the Honors Program core curriculum including both the Freshmen and Senior Seminars. To remain in the Honors Program, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and complete 30 credits of coursework each year. Students who fall below this minimum who wish to remain in the Program, may apply to the Honors Advisory Council which determines the merit of the petition.
