Process for Developing Institutional Student Learning Objectives

Dowling College's institutional student learning objectives are the foundation for the general education program. These learning objectives were established through the governance process and involved the Faculty Curriculum Committee, Faculty Meeting, and the Faculty-Administration Senate.

The institutional learning objectives resulted in a structure of requirements in English, mathematics and "Core" courses that is "intended to assure that all students are afforded the opportunity to acquire knowledge of their world, their fellows, and themselves that constitutes our common heritage as Americans and provides the context for our personal and professional lives."

The governance structure of the College as revised in 2007 charges the Faculty Curriculum Committee with responsibility for overseeing general education and college-wide requirements and the Academic Assessment and Research Committee with the responsibility to "plan, develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor a system of assessment in the areas of general education skills and general education knowledge."
